Furkotská dolina | Furkotská valley is located between the ridge of Ostrá and ridge of Solisko, west of Štrbské Pleso. The valley is 5,5 km long, opened to south. There are several terraces (moraines) and behind these you will most likely find the tarns. On the first terrace, which is located in mountain pines area, are located two small tarns (Furkotské plesá). Behind the next terrace is located Nižné Wahlenbergovo pleso and behind the last terrace right at the end of the valley is located second highest tarn (altitude/2145 m) in Vysoké Tatry called Vyšné Wahlenbergovo pleso. The tarns were named after the Swedish botanist Göran Wahlenberg, who made a research in this area in 1813. The indistinct peak at the end of the valley is called Furkotský štít. The lower section of valley is overgrown and near the forest road to Jamské pleso (tarn) – so called Nedobrého cesta/road - you can see the precious pine trees – limba/Terminalia superba. There is a stream flowing down the valley called Furkotský potok. Beneath the road to Štrbské Pleso – Tri studničky (green hiking trail) this stream joins the Zlomiskový potok (flows down the Važecká dolina (valley)) and these streams join together as river Biely Váh. The ridge of Solisko separates Furkotská dolina from Mlynická dolina and at the same time it is a boundary between the drainage basin of river Váh and river Poprad and consequently Čierne more (Black sea) and Baltské more (Baltic sea). There is a marked hiking trail in the valley, leading to Bystré sedlo (saddle) and to Mlynická dolina (valley). At the Solisko ridge near the cable car station is the chalet, which is accessible from Furkotská dolina by marked hiking trail. The most convenient starting point for Furkotská dolina tours is Štrbské Pleso. |
